Shrub/Bush Trimming (Pruning)
Tree Care, Shrub Pruning

Trimming and pruning plants in a landscape is a combination of “art” and “science.” Art comes into play as a landscaper cleans out dead limbs and shapes the shrub into a beautiful plant that balances and compliments your outdoor landscape. The “science” aspect is concerned about the technical aspects — when to prune which plants, how much to remove, etc.

Generally, the best time to prune is in the early spring while the plants are dormant. It is possible to prune spring flowering shrubs at that time, but flowers for that season will be lost. Therefore, it is advisable that spring flowering shrubs are usually pruned as soon as flowering has been completed.

Shrubs that flower in late spring and summer are best pruned in early spring. Avoid major pruning in late summer and early fall, as this may force late growth that will be damaged by freezing.
