 Tree Diseases

Diplodia Tip Blight
Symptoms:
Dead or dying needles at the tips of pine branches. All pines can contract this disease, however, Austrian pines seem to suffer the most. Diplodia can stunt the growth and eventually kill the tree.
Treatment:
Yearly fungicide application performed by certified applicator specialist is required.

Cedar Hawthorne Rust
Symptoms:
Small yellow spots appear in early spring. As they mature they turn orange with a small black dot in the center of the lesion. Severe rust may cause leaves to turn bright yellow and drop prematurely.
Treatment:
Yearly fungicide application performed by certified applicator specialist is required.

Girdling Roots
Symptoms:
Roots beginning to grow around main trunk at base of tree and slowly cut off water flow, nutrients and growth of tree.
Treatment:
Due to the complexity of the trees root system, it is recommended
that Certified Arborist evaluate and reduce the root system if possible.

Aphids
Symptoms
:
Small green or reddish bugs that are found on landscape plants and trees. Although they seldom kill the plant or tree, the sap they remove from the host can result in stunted growth and yellowing leaves.
Treatment:
An insecticide treatment will effectively control aphid population.

Iron Chlorosis
Symptoms:
Leaves are yellow-green to yellow while veins remain green.
In severe cases, the leaves may turn from yellow to white
and finally brown.
Treatment:
Once diagnosis has been confirmed, an iron injection into
the base of the tree will replenish lost iron and stimulate growth.

Pine Wilt
Symptoms:
Pine Wilt is a disease caused by a microscopic worm that is carried in the mouth parts of wood boring bark beetles that bores into healthy pines, primarily Scots pines, and interrupts the flow of sap to tree branches. The lack of the nutrient sap will cause the branches to turn brown and dies, quickly within weeks in some cases.
Treatment:
A Series of fungicide treatments performed by a certified applicator specialist to keep existing pines healthy. Pines that are already infected should be removed as soon as possible.

Rhizospheara
Symptoms:
A fungus that affects the needles on Spruce, in particular Colorado Spruce. Although this will not likely kill the tree, it will cause needle drop and branch die-back and can slow growth of the tree.
Treatment:
Yearly application of a fungicide treatment performed by a certified applicator specialist.
 Rhizospaera

Salt Damage
Symptoms:
Browning of bushes, shrubs and evergreen trees from salt applied by city and homeowners for ice removal. Long term exposure results in needle-tip burn, stunted growth and in severe cases kill the shrub or tree.
Treatment:
Rinse the salt of lower foliage when warmer temperatures permit. Water the soil thoroughly to flush out any remaining salt. Fertilize infected area in the spring.

Spider Mite Damage
Symptoms:
Spider Mites damage trees by sucking out the sap from leaves and needles causing them to discolor and drop prematurely. Leaves have small white flecks that appear in mid summer, giving a speckled appearance. They can distress or even kill the plant.
Treatment:
Several Miticide/Ovicide treatments over the course of the summer will combat and control Spider Mite damage.

Sycamore Anthracnose
Symptoms:
A fungus that appears on young leaves and resembles frost damage. The disease can cause leaf damage, branch die-back and stunt new growth.
Treatments:
Prune out the infected areas and have a fungicide application applied by a certified applicator.

Bagworms
Symptoms:
Bagworms appear as small cocoon like bags that hang off branches on a variety of evergreens as well as Sweet Gum, Maples, Honey Locust, Crab-apples, Sycamores and Black Cypress trees. They dine on buds and needles causing die-back of leaves and branches. heavy infestation can cause extensive defoliation and even death of the tree or plant.
Treatment:
Insecticide application by a certified applicator to control the bagworm infestation.

Scale
Symptoms:
Scale appears as a disk like or waxy substance on trees. Infection causes leaves to turn yellow and drop twig die-back and cracks in bark. This can draw flies, bees, wasps and black fungus to the sugary by-product. Certain species of scale can kill the tree.
Treatment:
Keep trees and shrubs well watered. Although a thorough rinsing will remove some of the scale, it will not eradicate the problem. An insecticide application will prevent re-occurrence of scale.
